Troubadour is an animated vinyl record experience that uses the rotational motion of a turntable to activate the turning disc’s hand-drawn frames. Inspired by the mechanism of zoetropes and phenakistoscopes, the Troubadour team wanted to do a deep dive into analog animation practices over the course of this project. The resulting animation disc + vinyl record combo brings the story of our little troubadour to life. Dedicated as a love letter to the graduating class of 2023, the mixtape of songs follows the narrative of an explorer navigating uncertain terrain, not unlike a lot of us right now. Wanting to do something really out there, this team has had a wonderful time pushing the limits of their creativity one final time in UW’s design program.
